Inputs and limitations
- Salary or other non-savings income: use the gross amount before tax. Do not include dividends here.
- Dividends: use the amount before tax shown on your dividend vouchers. The £500 dividend allowance is taxed at 0%, but it still uses up room in the tax bands.
- Income covered by your unused personal allowance is not taxed. Dividends held in an ISA are not taxed, so leave them out.
- This is an estimate for England, Wales and Northern Ireland using 2026/27 rates. It does not include savings income or tax already paid through PAYE, and it does not file a return for you.
Worked example
GOV.UK's example uses wages of £29,570 and dividends of £3,000.
- 1. The personal allowance is set against the wages first.
- 2. The £500 dividend allowance covers the first £500 of the £3,000 dividends.
- 3. The remaining £2,500 of dividends is taxed at 10.75%.
£2,500 × 10.75% = £268.75 dividend tax
